In particular, they make manipulating tags in the content easy without littering text with literal markers like other editing environments. That said, I think they have nailed a good authoring model. I have so many use cases for using variables in things like destination files.). It has lots of stupid limitations (like, for example, where you can use variables. If ypu want to make significant changes to the layout. ![]() If you want your output to look the way they want it, you're fine. Occasionally, even typing gets so slow it's like I typing into a 300 baud terminal circa 1981. ![]() The real pain points for me and my team is how slow the thing is. I've never seen another authoring environment that has that type of fundamental issues. Those sorts of bugs just makes it feel sloppy and half-assed. Or selectin a few cells in a table suddenly selects the entire table. I.e, at leat once a week, I'll be typing a new paragraph and when I hit space, it'll jump to the start of the paragraph. It's OK usually for actual authoring, aside from the frequent freak outs it does. I used it for a week and then went and bought a Snagit license with my own money just to have a useable product. I am also not a fan of MadCap Capture, their image editing tool. ![]() I will say that the built in Git implementation is a bit lacking and doesn't cover all the use cases I need, so I just do all my source control stuff from the command line. A year or so later I was able to take the Advanced course, and that has helped as I start to totally redesign the look and feel of our online help. When I started my current job my only exposure to Flare had been working through the tutorial for the free 30 day trial - that gave me enough to get started, but I was able to get my company to let me take the Intro/Basics course (which I think is now bundled with the price of the license). If you haven't, try to take some of the training courses offered by MadCap. But for me it does the job quite well, and beats the hell out of having to maintain documentation in Word. Granted, it's just a WYSIWYG editing tool with some single sourcing features built in and will never be as powerful as something like LaTeX. I maintain both HTML and PDF documentation with it. It does pretty much exactly what I need it to do, and I'm usually able to figure out how to make it do anything else I want it to do fairly easily by looking at forum posts or reading the documentation.
